It comes out of the faucet, through the garden hose to your backyard oasis, and…  a few moments later…instant swimming pool. Toss in a couple of neon pool floats, slap on some sunscreen, mix a marg and you’ve got a perfect pool.


Well (see what we did there?), hold on there cowboy. There’s a whole list of hidden factors that go into your pool water’s actual chemical composition.


Here at Pyramid Pool Service, we hate (but secretly love) to be the bearers of complex scientific news, but your swimming pool isn't just a giant bucket of tap water. It is a living, breathing, dynamic chemical ecosystem. You could think of it a bit like a massive backyard science experiment. 


Every single thing that touches your pool, from a passing Central Texas breeze to your cousin’s heavy-duty oily sunscreen, alters the molecular makeup of the water you're swimming in.


So, if you’ve ever wondered what is actually swirling around in your pool water, let’s dive deep into the fascinating (we think) story of real world pool water chemistry, Austin style.


The Origin Story: City Water and Well Water in Austin 


Not all water is born equal. The chemical journey of your pool starts well before we start adding chlorine and managing the chemistry; it starts the exact second you turn on the spigot to fill or top off the pool. Depending on where your home sits in the greater Austin area, your tap water has a highly specific chemical makeup shaped by Texas geology.


When we talk about initial water composition, a major player we look at is Total Hardness, which is primarily a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Because a massive portion of Central Texas sits directly on top of the Edwards Aquifer and a whole lot of ancient limestone, our water is famously, unapologetically "hard." But of course,  the exact flavor of that hardness changes radically depending on your specific water district.


Central Austin & Westlake

If you live in central neighborhoods like East Austin or Northwest Austin or over in Westlake, your tap water is largely drawn from the Colorado River and Lake Austin. Out of the tap, this water is moderately hard. However, our blazing, triple-digit Texas summers cause massive amounts of pure water to evaporate off your pool's surface every single day. When water evaporates, it leaves all its minerals behind. Then, every time your automatic filler (or your manual trip to the faucet) kicks on to top the pool back up with city water, it adds more calcium. Over time, these minerals concentrate in your pool like the queso at the end of a party.


Round Rock, Cedar Park, & Leander

Heading north into Williamson County and the rugged edges of Travis County, you hit heavy limestone country. The water coming out of the municipality lines in Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Leander boasts an incredibly high baseline calcium hardness, often hovering around 175 to 200+ parts per million (ppm) straight out of the faucet. If you don't keep a watchful eye on this, that dissolved limestone will readily fall out of solution, leaving rough, white, crusty scale lines all over your beautiful custom tile work and inside your expensive pool heater.


Dripping Springs & Hill Country Wells

Welcome to the wild west of water chemistry. If you are down south in Kyle, municipal reports frequently show average water hardness climbing past 280 ppm. And if you are out on a private well in places like Dripping Springs or Wimberley, you aren’t just dealing with extreme calcium hardness; you’re also inviting iron, copper, manganese, and sulfur to the party. Well water can look pristine coming out of the ground, but the moment it mixes with pool chlorine, those dissolved metals can oxidize, turning your pool a startling shade of emerald green or dark tea-brown overnight.


💡 Pro-Tip from the Pyramid Team: If you are filling a newly plastered pool or completely draining an old one in the Austin area, never fill it through a residential water softener without professional guidance. While soft water sounds nice, water completely stripped of calcium becomes "hungry." It will actively leach calcium straight out of your pool’s plaster or tile grout to balance itself out, causing permanent structural pitting and deterioration.

Every single chemical additive leaves behind a permanent chemical "by-product" or parting gift. Your pool water acts like a ledger, keeping an absolute history of everything you’ve ever poured into it.

Liquid Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite)

Liquid chlorine is a fantastic, un-stabilized sanitizer. It goes in, kills algae, destroys bacteria, and dissipates under the sun. But its secondary byproduct is ordinary salt (NaCl). If you run a standard chlorine pool for years using strictly liquid chlorine, your pool’s salinity level will naturally creep up over time, eventually mimicking the baseline salt levels of a saltwater pool!


Cal-Hypo (Calcium Hypochlorite)

This is one of the most popular powdered shocks on the market. It’s highly effective at blasting away organic contaminants. However, as the name clearly states, it is bound together by calcium. Every time you throw a bag of Cal-Hypo into your pool, you are dumping more physical calcium into an ecosystem that is already struggling with Austin’s naturally rock-hard tap water. Overusing Cal-Hypo in our geographic area is a fast track to cloudy water, clogged filters, and severe scaling on your plaster.


Dichlor & Trichlor (The Classic Floating Chlorine Tabs)

Those slow-dissolving white pucks that people drop into their chlorinators or floating plastic ducks seem like the ultimate convenience. But they come heavily packed with something called Cyanuric Acid (CYA), also known as pool stabilizer or sunscreen for chlorine.


Without CYA, the intense Texas sun would burn away your pool's free chlorine in less than two hours. So, a little bit of CYA is absolutely mandatory. The catch? Chlorine gets consumed as it cleans the pool, but CYA never evaporates, never degrades, and never leaves the water. It builds up endlessly.


When your CYA levels get too high (typically over 80–100 ppm), it creates a phenomenon known as "CYA Lock." The stabilizer essentially holds the chlorine hostage, preventing it from releasing and sanitizing the water. You could have a massive amount of chlorine in your water, but because the CYA levels are off the charts, the chlorine is completely asleep, and your pool will turn a vibrant, swampy green anyway. The only true cure for CYA lock? Partially draining the pool and refilling it with fresh water.


Muriatic Acid

Because Austin tap water is naturally highly alkaline and high in pH, local pools constantly experience an upward drift in pH. To combat this, pool techs regularly add Muriatic Acid. The acid safely lowers the pH and Total Alkalinity, keeping the water comfortable for human eyes and preventing mineral scaling.


The Ultimate Mythbust: Saltwater vs. Chlorine Pools

Let’s tackle the single biggest misconception our technicians encounter. It usually sounds something like this: "I want to convert my pool to a saltwater system because I have sensitive skin and I don't want any chlorine in my water."


We love the enthusiasm, and we absolutely love saltwater pools, but it's time for a friendly reality check: Saltwater pools are chlorine pools. There is no magic, chlorine-free loophole here!


Here is how the science actually works. When we convert a pool to a saltwater system, we add hundreds of pounds of pure pool salt directly into the water until it reaches a mild salinity (roughly the same salinity as a human tear—you won't feel like you're swimming in the Atlantic Ocean).


Your pool equipment pad is outfitted with a specialized piece of tech called an electrolytic chlorine generator, or a "salt cell." As the mildly salty pool water passes through this cell, a low-voltage electrical current zaps the salt molecules ($NaCl$). This electrical charge splits the salt apart, transforming it instantly into sodium hypochlorite—which is the exact same active sanitizing ingredient found in liquid pool chlorine!


So, if a saltwater pool is just manufacturing its own chlorine, why does everyone say it feels so much better?

  • The "Spa" Feel: Dissolved salt completely changes the water's saturation index, giving it a remarkably silky, smooth texture. It acts like a natural skin conditioner.

  • No Chemical Whiplash: Instead of a human manually dumping a big jug of liquid chlorine or dropping harsh chemical pucks into the pool once a week (creating wild spikes and drops in sanitizer levels), the salt cell quietly creates a tiny, steady, continuous stream of pure chlorine whenever the pump is running.

  • Gentle on the Eyes and Skin: Because the chlorine levels remain beautifully stable and perfectly balanced, you don't get the harsh chemical side effects, burning red eyes, or itchy skin often associated with traditionally treated pools.


In short: You aren’t swimming in ocean water; you’re swimming in a brilliantly engineered, skin-loving chlorine factory.


The Uninvited Guests: Runoff, Environment...and You

If your pool water consisted purely of source water and professional chemicals, maintenance would be a total breeze. But a pool sits outdoors, entirely vulnerable to Mother Nature and the direct lifestyle of the family using it.


The Great Central Texas Environment

  • The Dreaded Cedar Fever Season: Every winter, Ash Juniper trees release thick, aggressive clouds of orange-yellow pollen. Why does pool water in Austin, TX always have a high pH?

Austin’s municipal tap water originates from the Colorado River and local limestone aquifers (such as the Edwards Aquifer), giving it a naturally high starting pH and Total Alkalinity. Additionally, intense Central Texas summer temperatures cause high evaporation rates and aeration, which drives carbon dioxide out of the water and relentlessly forces pH levels to rise.

Because Austin tap water comes out of the hose with high calcium levels (often 200–300+ ppm), calcium carbonate scale buildup along the tile line is extremely common. To manage this:

  • Keep your pH lower (7.2 to 7.4) and alkalinity in check to keep calcium in solution.

  • Add a sequestering agent (stain and scale inhibitor) regularly.

  • Use muriatic acid or specialized tile cleaners for mild scale, or schedule professional bead blasting for heavy buildup.
