When it gets hot in Austin - and boy howdy does it get hot - your backyard swimming pool oasis is perfect for cooling off. But are you sure you're not also dipping into environmental damage for Texas? Maybe you’ve never given a thought to the environmental impact of your swimming pool? Well, not to worry, Pyramid Pool Service is here to help you understand ways in which you can enjoy your swimming pool in Austin, TX, while still caring for your local environment and our Mother Earth!
In the face of an uncertain and ongoing drought, it’s more important than ever to do everything you can to minimize your impact and maximize your water use efficiency. Especially in greater Austin, where our vital lakes are at record lows across the area.
Why DE filters and Sand filters are bad for Texas.
You're not drinking the pool water, so where’s all that water going? (And if you are, Pyramid Pool Service recommends you switch to sweet tea 😂). What’s contributing to your sky-high water usage bills month after month? Simple. If your pool has a DE filter or sand filter system, then we’re willing to put money on this as the culprit. Obviously it’s imperative that your system is in tip top shape with no leaks, from the plumbing to the plaster. However, when comparing apples to apples, the biggest drain on Texas’ water resources (and your pocket), is your filtration system.
There’s 3 basic filter types:
Replaceable Paper Cartridge filter
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filter
Sand/glass media filter
Cartridge filters work just like the fuel and oil filters in your car, or the water filter in your house. They have a self-contained paper filter element that traps particles down to a 10-20 micron size. They’re cleaned with a hose and brush and can’t be backwashed. Cartridge filters can filter a surface area of up to 500 square feet (sometimes more depending on the filter!).
DE filters & Sand filters both use a loose filtration media that deposits itself onto a framework of fine mesh grids. These filter types can only filter up to 100 square feet. Not only do they require more frequent maintenance, but due to the much lower filtration surface area, both these filter types require frequent backwashing. We’re talking sometimes once a week or more…and that’s where the sneaky environmental impact comes into the equation.
Backwashing pumps a large volume of water through the filter in the opposite direction and out to waste to clean out debris from the filter media and some of the DE or sand itself. This uses a huge volume of water, all of which goes to waste. Just to give you an idea, we’re talking 250 - 1000 gallons of water per backwash, depending on the size of your pool and type of equipment.
The bottom line is that cartridge filters use less water because they don’t need backwashing, they also last longer and are overall easier to maintain, clean and repair. If you don’t have a modern cartridge filter, YOU might be contributing to the drought conditions here in Austin, Texas. But don’t sweat, Pyramid Pool Service will consult with you on how to bring your pool equipment up to scratch. You can have your pool and swim in it too!
5 more ways to keep your pool eco-friendly.
1. Choose environmentally friendly pool equipment
Investing in energy-efficient pool equipment can greatly reduce your energy consumption. Look for:
Variable-Speed Pool Pumps: These use significantly less electricity compared to single-speed pumps and allow you to adjust the speed based on your pool’s needs.
LED Pool Lighting: LED lights consume up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent lights and last longer, reducing both energy costs and waste.
Heat Pumps: Keep your pool heated in the colder months and chilled in the warmer months without relying on fossil fuels used by natural gas and propane heaters.
2. Optimize water usage
Water conservation is crucial in Texas, especially during droughts. In addition to having a cartridge filter system, here are ways to reduce water usage in your pool:
Regular Maintenance: Ensure your pool is well-maintained to prevent leaks and evaporation. Regularly check for cracks and seal any gaps.
Cover Your Pool: Using a pool cover when it’s not in use can significantly reduce evaporation, helping you save water and keep the pool warmer.
Rainwater Harvesting: Consider installing a rainwater collection system to fill your pool. This sustainable method reduces your reliance on municipal water.
3. Use eco-friendly pool chemicals
Traditional pool chemicals can be harmful to both your health and the environment. Opt for eco-friendly alternatives:
Natural Sanitizers: Use saltwater systems or mineral purifiers to reduce the need for harsh chemicals. These methods are less likely to irritate skin and eyes.
Biosafe Algaecides: Look for biodegradable algaecides that won’t harm aquatic life or disrupt local ecosystems.
4. Landscape with sustainability in mind
Your pool area can be a beautiful, sustainable oasis with careful landscaping choices:
Native Plants: Incorporate native Texas plants that require less water and are well adapted to the local climate. This reduces the need for irrigation and supports local wildlife.
Permeable Surfaces: Use permeable materials for pool decks and walkways to promote groundwater recharge and reduce runoff.
5. Consider energy-efficient heating options
Heating your pool can significantly increase your energy bill. To mitigate this:
Solar Covers: Solar blankets can help retain heat from the sun, reducing the need for additional heating.
Optimize Heating and Cooling Schedule: Only heat or chill your pool when you plan to use it, and lower the temperature during off-peak times.
Conclusion
