In short:
Look for a pool repairs company that is fully insured, RAIL licensed, deeply experienced and present for any follow up work or warranty claims.
Work with a pool repairs company that cares about their reputation and the quality of work they perform.
Your Pool Repair Pro should have long standing relationships with licensed distributors and reputable, proven brands and manufacturers.
When something’s off with your pool, you want it fixed right away. If you have a trusted pool service company that also performs repairs, it's easy. You know they’re sending fully licensed, insured and experienced repair pros who give you the same personal service as your weekly pool tech. They value their reputation and love keeping your pool perfect so they won’t settle for anything less. You get an honest diagnosis, customized solutions, guaranteed labor and parts, as well as any follow up needed.
But what happens when you don’t have a trusted, established relationship with your pool service company? Or maybe they don’t offer repairs? Or maybe you take care of your own pool and you just need someone to fix an issue that's out of your wheelhouse? Today we go over the things to consider when you’re faced with a pool equipment malfunction (such as pumps not pumping and filters not filtering) or when looking to upgrade your equipment, lighting or automation systems.
How well do you know that guy crouched over your pool equipment?
Your friend of a friend in the cut-off shirt, who said he could replace your fried filter on the cheap. Have you seen his RAIL license? Does he purchase the equipment and parts he’s installing at a licensed wholesale distributor? Will he be around to address any problems in a year? Will he even be around next week in case a warranty claim pops up? If you answered no to any of the above…NEXT! 🙂
Smart pool owners work together with a reputable, licensed pool repair company. Just like weekly service techs, pool repair pros should be highly trained, licensed, and ideally part of the same company that cares for them and for you. This is exactly how we roll at Pyramid Pool Service and wouldn’t settle for anything less with our own pools.
It’s just pipes and wires…or is it?
Pool systems can be deceptively complex, and problems have a tendency to get worse when they’re improperly fixed. The unfortunate truth, though, is that the pool industry is largely unregulated. Pretty much anyone can make promises. Maybe they’ll even do the job and fix your pool problem. But unless you really know your pool guy, and really know they’re a pro, you’re opening up your pool, your wallet and even your family to a whole list of potential disasters.
What to look for in your pool repairs company
Fully Licensed.
Right off the bat, if your pool repair company doesn’t have a valid RAIL Contractor license, don’t let them anywhere near your pool equipment, maybe don’t even let them into your backyard. To verify, you can always ask your repair company for their TDLR number, usually listed somewhere on the website of a licensed company. A RAIL (Residential Appliance Installer) License is required in Texas for anyone performing electrical work on residential pools and spas. That means installing and repairing pumps, lights, heaters, and automation systems. You wouldn’t let any cowboy mess with your home’s electrical system, this goes for your pool as well.
Fully Insured.
A legitimate and dependable Pool Repair Pro provides protection, and ultimate peace of mind. This isn't just about the quality of the repair, but the safety and security of your property and family. A reputable pool repair company carries comprehensive insurance, for the pool industry, and is required by the state. That means you’re protected from liability should a worker be injured on your property, or any damage to your home or neighboring properties that might occur during the repair process. It’s the worst case scenario, of course, but isn’t that exactly when you need to be best protected by your pool guy? We don’t settle for anything less than perfect and choosing a fully insured professional is just another safeguard against the unforeseen.
Deeply Experienced.
Again, pool systems are deceptively complex.t takes a surprising degree of knowledge to diagnose the root cause of even the seemingly obvious problems and to plan out the most cost effective repair. The best Pool Repair Pros are highly trained, with the experience to know where problems arise, and how to fix the entire pool system quickly, effectively and for good. There’s much more to it than watching a YouTube video and throwing parts at a problem.
Reputable Parts.
Speaking of parts, it’s amazing we even have to say this, but if they’re offering a pump from Temu, walk away. Your Pool Repair Pro should have long standing relationships with licensed distributors and reputable, proven brands and manufacturers.. They know how your whole pool system works, and know exactly what equipment to recommend and install to fix any problems. It’s not worth risking the old knockoff pump switcheroo. Are you sure you’re getting the right pump for your system? Are you sure it’s brand new with a serviceable manufacturer warranty? If it seems too cheap to be true - it is… especially when it comes to warranty situations.
We Worry About the Warranty.
You see cheap parts on an online reseller site, and think: “ This is way cheaper than the quote my pool pro gave me, maybe I’ll just do it myself. What could go wrong?” That answer is: plenty, and should something go wrong, even within the manufacturer warranty period, you can bet your bottom dollar the online reseller won’t be there to service the warranty. This leaves it up to you to chase down the manufacturer, who will - maybe, if you can find them - set you up with a local warranty station, to - hopefully - get the repair done… by who knows when…meanwhile you’re STILL not swimming in your pool. Of course, a real Pool Repairs Pro takes responsibility for the parts they use fixing your pool, so they also take full responsibility for the short and long term performance of the fix. This absolutely should include handling any warranty claims.
Conclusion: why you should use a real pro for all your pool repairs
You wouldn’t let just anyone into your house each week to take care of your pool so why take the risk with repairs and upgrades? Your pool is the jewel of your backyard, at least as far as we’re concerned. The reason to even have a pool care company look after it for you in the first place is to keep it sparkling, at its absolute best. You should expect perfection from your pool service and repairs company, and trust that they deliver it week in, week out. If you're not 100% confident about whoever that is with a hacksaw in your backyard about to fix your pool, it's never worth the risk.
